Government wants to stop welfare payments to illegal immigrants

Individuals who reside in Norway without a residence permit will no longer be able to receive welfare payments. Instead, the government wants to offer food coupons and a bed to sleep in.

“There should be no doubt that illegal residents will no longer receive financial help in the form of welfare payments,” says Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion Robert Eriksson (The Progress Party/FrP).

In Friday’s cabinet meeting, the government decided to change the law that regulates people’s rights to social services without a valid residence permit.

In an previous interview with NTB in January, Eriksson said that the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration’s main rule should be to give aid to individuals without legal residency in the form of food and a place to sleep, not financial aid.

“This will help underline that this aid is not an income, but concrete help in an emergency situation,” says Eriksson.
