Stable Norwegian Merchant Fleet

4

The Norwegian Merchant Fleet has remained much the same in size and scope for the last four years.

At the end of 2013 the Norwegian Merchant fleet consisted of 388 vessels with a gross tonnage of 15 997 000 tonnes.

The change in the number of vessels and gross tonnage last year is typical for these four years, with 4 fewer ships and a 290 000 drop in tonnage.

While the fleet as a whole remains steady, the two registries making up the fleet follow different trajectories. In NOR (Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register) there were 888 ships with 2 000 000 gross tonnes by the end of 2013. This is a 2 per cent drop in the number of ships and almost 3 per cent more gross tonnage than the year before. NIS (Norwegian International Ship Register) on the other hand experienced a growth in both the number of ships and in gross tonnage; both were up 2.5 per cent. There were 500 ships and almost 14 000 000 of gross tonnage in NIS at the end of 2013.
